Righteousness

- “There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing. Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?” (Ecclesiastes 7:15-16).
- Unless your righteousness exceeds, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:20).
- For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith (Philippians 3:8-11).
- The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer (1 Peter 3:12).
- Even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed (1 Peter 3:14).
God’s Judgement
The Old Testament
- No one who grumbled against God will enter the Promised Land (Israel) (Numbers 14:30).
- I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgement (Exodus 7:4).
- You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise. He is your God (Deuteronomy 10:20-21).
- Consider the discipline of the Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, his signs and his deeds that he did in Egypt, and how the Lord has destroyed them to this day, and what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place (Deuteronomy 11:2-5).
- If you indeed obey the commandments, He will give you rain for your land in its season. If you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly (Deuteronomy 11:13-17).
- Be careful to obey these words commanded to you, that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever (Deuteronomy 12:28).
- If you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments, the Lord will set you high above all the nations of the earth, and blessings shall come upon you. The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. And the Lord will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you his good treasury, the heavens. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down (Deuteronomy 28:1-13).
- The Lord said ‘Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will save you no more (Judges 10:11-13).
- Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgement, with every secret thing, whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).
The New Testament
- When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that their fasting may be seen by others. Let your fasting be seen by your Father who sees in secret and will reward you (Matthew 6:16-18).
- The Final Judgement: When the Son of Man comes in his glory, he will sit on his throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people from one another. He will place the sheep on his right, and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on the right ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you.’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’ And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (Matthew 25:31-34, 41, and 46).
- Watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and stand before the Son of Man (Luke 21:34-36).
- Who are you to pass judgement on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls (Romans 14:4).
- I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done (Revelation 22:12).
