The Bible - Logic and wisdom found in the Bible

There is much logic to be taken away from the teachings in the Bible, and wisdom to help in life. The following extracts have been given as some examples.
- Choose your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced (Deuteronomy 1:13).
- Judge righteously between a man and his brother. You shall not be partial in judgement. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone (Deuteronomy 1:16-17).
- Fools despise wisdom and instruction (Proverbs 1:7).
- “Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief.” (Proverbs 14:13)
- “Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it.” (Proverbs 15:17)
- “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” (Proverbs 18:17)
- “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)
- “By wise guidance wage war.” (Proverbs 20:18)
- Afterlife: “All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.” (Ecclesiastes 3:20)
- Two are better than one. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? (Ecclesiastes 4:9-11).
- Death comes to us all (Ecclesiastes 9).
- “He who is joined with all of the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing.” (Ecclesiastes 9:4-5)
- Enjoy life with the One you love (Ecclesiastes 9:9).
- Whoever is not against us, is for us (Mark 9:40).
- Do not be anxious about your life, and what you will eat, nor about your body, and what you will put on. Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble (Matthew 6:25-34).
- Judge not, that you be not judged. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (Matthew 7:1 and 3).
- Stay dressed for action. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes (Luke 12:35 and 37).
- Who are you to pass judgement? It is before his master that he stands or falls (Romans 14:4).
A Time for Everything (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
What God gives us / Faith brings us
The word of the Bible helps us to answer life’s big questions and learn ‘good’ ways to follow. Whereas a belief in God’s word helps us put into action the lessons learnt from the Bible. The following lists are simply guidance, most points could fall into either list depending on the focus given. All points are brought to us through the Bible, but some points focus more on the belief behind them to function, and other points focus on the teaching to follow.
What the word of God teaches us through the Bible
- The lesson of compromise can be learnt from Abram and Lot. Their possessions were so great that they could not dwell on the same land together, as it produced conflict between the herdsmen and livestock of each. So, Abram says to Lot: “Let there be no strife between you and me. […] If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.” (Genesis 13:5-9)
- Knowledge and reason for the unknown: The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law (Deuteronomy 29:29).
- Deeper meaning / belief in the beyond: It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all (John 6:63).
- The Bible teaches you the importance of love and if I “have not love, I am nothing. […] Love never ends. As for prophesies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.” (1 Corinthians 13:2 and 8)
- Consistency: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
- Wisdom: Wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere (James 3:17).
- Even the greatest sufferer that lives among us has something to be grateful to God for, living in a world of redeeming love and the offer of heaven before them.
What believing in God’s word brings us
- Faith: Believing in the Lord increases your faith in yourself and your own capabilities (Luke 17:6).
- Christ set us free from slavery: In this, Christian followers were called to freedom, with the hope that this freedom would help each one to serve each other through love (Galatians 5:1).
- All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16).
- Everything will happen in due course and at the right time: The wise heart will know the proper time and the just way (Ecclesiastes 8:5).
- The teachings of being steadfast and having patience, to not only choose God but to wait for Him to come, help humans to make a choice and stick to it no matter what (James 5:7-12).
